MANDYS PLANT & GARDEN CENTRE - ALFORD [126]

Wednesday 1st July – Sunday 5th July 2009

This new site had only been open a few months when I arrived but a recent mention in the club magazine had brought an initial busy period. This will probably slow down until the site is listed in the directory in a couple of year’s time. Not a good prospect for the owners when a more simplistic way of keeping the directory up to date could be used.

The approach is basically straight forward although the road is narrow with some right angle bends. Only use the advised directions as sat nav routes from Louth take you along very narrow country lanes, The pitching area is behind the garden centre and has two small hard standings which will be useful during winter months especially for front wheel drive motor homes. The remaining grass pitches are well spaced and level. Visitors with small children need to be aware of a pond in an adjacent gated field. The owners’ dogs are inquisitive which seemed to upset animals belonging to some guests.

Unfortunately Alford seems to be closing down. I was in this area a couple of years ago and many shops had closed since then. There is a small supermarket and most other services at the moment, and the fish & chip shop close to the market square seemed popular. The museum is worth a visit as is the windmill to the north of the town. There is plenty to do in the surrounding area with the Lincolnshire Wolds and the seaside all within driving distance. If you want a bus you will have to walk into Alford.

DAIRY FARM - CHAPEL ST LEONARDS [125]

Saturday 27th June – Wednesday 1st July 2009

I tried to visit this site two years ago but the pitching area was flooded and I finished up across the road in a commercial site. This time I didn’t have any problems as the weather had been dry for a few weeks, but I noticed the dyke which runs down one side of the property had been recently cleared. The pitching area is on well mown grass with plenty of room. It is situated on the edge of the village of Anderby which is a couple of miles inland from the coast. There is a pub and convenience store at Anderby Creek however if you require anything else you will have to visit nearby Chapel St Leonards, which has a few shops, takeaways, and a small supermarket. The area to the south of the town is very popular with holiday makers and there are a lot of static caravan sites.

A minibus to Chapel St Leonards, where connections to all areas can be found, runs past the site entrance but I understand that it needs to be pre-booked a couple of hours in advance. If you don’t use this you will need your car or a bicycle to explore the local area.

SKEGNESS SANDS - SKEGNESS [124]

Tuesday 23rd June – Saturday 27th June 2009

The approach to this site off the A52 could not be easier using the Winthorpe Avenue entrance. Information indicates that reception is closed 1-2 PM but I was told that this is not the case during peak periods. It may be worth checking if you intend to arrive during these times. Pitches are pre – allocated and you are given a key for the various gates around the site and the toilet block. My Caravan Club membership card was taken as a deposit for these. The touring pitches are on one side of a much larger static van site and there is a swimming complex within this site which is available for touring guests. The beach is only yards away and is overlooked by a coastguard lookout. The imposing Derbyshire Miners Welfare Home is housed within the imposing building on one side of the site.

A short walk down Winthorpe Avenue to Roman Bank [A52} brings you to a convenience store, a fish and chip shop, a Chinese carry out and a couple of pubs. One of these pubs has an ATM that is apparently free to use. All other services are in nearby Skegness and can be reached using one of the many buses that run down Roman Bank. Butlins and Ingoldmells are nearby in the opposite direction.

This is a great site for a bucket & spade seaside holiday and young kids should love it. The present financial climate should help revive this once popular resort, all we need is decent weather
